Australian Property Home Loans Director and broker Adele Andrews has shared her perspective with Australian Broker following new figures showing Australia’s economy expanded by just 0.3% in the first quarter of 2026.
Asked whether the latest figures could signal the economy is edging closer to recession, Adele said: “It wouldn’t surprise me at all.”
She pointed to rising unemployment and slowing economic growth, saying: “There’s definitely a lack of confidence in the market. I’ve had clients who were going to buy properties and now they’re not.”
Adele also highlighted the impact of recent Budget outcomes, saying they had “probably further compounded what’s going on.”
With uncertainty continuing to affect borrowers and prospective buyers, Adele said: “There’s definitely a lack of confidence and there’s definitely a lot of caution.”
She added: “You’d hope it doesn’t get to that,” referring to the prospect of recession, but described it as “a bit of a troubling time”, with people “sitting on their hands more than making bold decisions.”
